Puppies

All puppies raised here at Kilmaren Cavaliers have the advantage of being born into the home of an experienced animal trainer. Teri understands the needs of a developing puppy and the pups are socialized and exposed to a variety of educational and stimulating environments before they leave for their forever homes.

All pups are born in the house with Teri in attendance. Teri sleeps with the dam and her litter for at least 10 days to insure that all pups are getting their fair share and to supervise and assist mom if she needs help adjusting to motherhood. The Cavalier puppies are gently handled each day and exposed to a series of early neurological stimulations which have been shown to strengthen the pup’s immune systems and to also improve the pup’s ability to deal with stress throughout their lives.

As the puppies get older, they are individually handled, groomed, have their nails trimmed, are massaged over their bodies, all the while they are learning to accept gentle restraint. Once they are old enough to play, their environment is enriched with toys, puzzles to solve, structures to climb on, tunnels to run through, and several different types of wonderful things to chew. They each learn to spend time along in a crate for brief periods so that when they go to their new homes they will not be unnecessarily stressed by that first time in a crate.

The pups born here are taken on car trips, exposed to tapes of loud but common household noises, as well as vacuum cleaners, dish washers, and other household appliances. We play music, both classical and not-so-classical so that the puppies can become accustomed to all types of music which they might encounter in their new homes. We also play tapes of thunderstorms in an effort to prevent fear of thunder later in life.

We believe in raising our puppies by the Rules of Sevens that Pat Hasting recommends in her book, Another Piece of the Puzzle:

By the time a puppy is 7 weeks old it should have:

Been on 7 different surfaces, such as: carpet, concrete, wood, vinyl, grass, dirt, gravel, wood chips, newspaper, etc.

Played with 7 different types of objects, such as: big balls, small balls, soft fabric toys, fuzzy balls, squeaky toys, metal items, wooden items, paper/cardboard items, milk/soda jugs, etc.

Been in 7 different locations, including: front yard, backyard, basement, kitchen, car, garage, laundry room, bathroom, crate, kennel, etc.

Been exposed to 7 challenges, such as: climbed a box, climbed off a box, gone through a tunnel, climbed up steps, climbed down steps, climbed over obstacles, played hide and seek, gone in and out of a doorway with a step, etc.

Eaten from 7 different containers: metal, plastic, cardboard, paper, china, pie plate, frying pan, etc.

Eaten in 7 different locations: crate, yard, kitchen, basement, laundry room, bedroom, x-pen, etc.

Met and played with 7 new people, including children and the elderly.

We strongly believe that early socialization, which includes stimulation from a variety of sources, can go a long way toward producing an outgoing, confident adult!

All of our puppies “come with” complete information packets to help make the transition easier for the new family and puppy alike. We believe that you will have a much easier time making that transition if you are well prepared.

For this reason, once it is mutually agreed that your next puppy will be a Kilmaren Cavalier and we have received your deposit, we will send you a Puppy-Parent-to-be Care Package to help you prepare in advance of the new arrival. This packet includes a couple of excellent books, information about the food your puppy is currently eating and other instructions to help you once your new baby comes home, as well as a list of items you may like to purchase before your puppy comes home, and a copy of our sales contract for you to review.

When you come to pick up your puppy, you will receive a second Go Home Package that contains a health certificate from my Veterinarian, food to tide your puppy over, photos of the parents, puppy photos, and a copy of your puppy’s pedigree, a copy of the CKCSC Code of Ethics, an invitation to become a CKCSC-USA member, and your puppy’s registration paperwork or bill of sale if the paperwork has not yet arrived. Your puppy will go home with his or her own collar to which he is already accustomed and a special toy which has been in his play area with his brothers and sisters. This toy will allow him to have the scent of his littermates to sleep with during those first, sometimes difficult, nights in his new forever home.

Our Cavaliers live in the house as part of the family. As such we choose to keep our numbers low. We breed only thoughtfully planned litters when we are hoping for a puppy for ourselves. Because of this, it will sometimes be necessary to wait for just the right Kilmaren Cavalier puppy. If this does not suit you, we will be happy to refer you to other conscientious breeders.

All Kilmaren Cavalier puppies come with a lifetime of service-after-the sale support and assistance.
